How Do You Re-Connect The Gps When It Disappears?

On a trip last weekend my GPS dropped off. The letters "GPS" that are normally (under the compass icon on top left) disappeared meaning that I wasn't receiving signal. I dropped into a Toyota dealer whose ex-Lexus mechanic (Lexus dealership closed 3 months ago) went through the screen's diagnostics noting that the GPS was obviously not connecting however the various satellite settings were still showing which didn't add up. He suggested I check the wire connections on the DVD player & also reload the DVD when I returned home to see if that fixed the anomaly. I did both but to no avail. Has this occurred to anyone else or does anyone have any suggestions?
