  1. Hey guys, I don't have access to my car atm, and I was just wondering if anyone could tell me the internal diameter of the upper radiator hose? Thought I'd just get my brother to get me an adaptor for my water temp gauge while he's in Japan that's all. Kinda needing this info by Sat night/Sun morning, so any help would be gratefully appreciated :) Thanks in advance guys! Cheers, Lawrence.
  2. Corey: Thats awesome mate, it'll be good to see how the results turn out. Have you decided who you are going to get to tune it yet? Do you know if you can run the car with a map sensor as well? I'm still tossing up whether to keep the microtech or not. My brother is in Japan atm with his wife (who's Japanese), and they've been getting stuff for me. Maybe if the results are good, I can get them to pick me one up before they come home, since she knows people in the performance car business! :) They're already getting me a couple of things :) Nothing that will really surprise you though! Did you manage to get rid of your Link as well? Cheers, Lawrence.
  3. 4Rolln: Doesn't Trust make one specifically for the SXE10? I though they did anyway. Their ones retail for about 7800 yen, so thats about $110 or so? I think they're dual gauge pods. My brother is in Japan atm, and I told him to get me one (along with HKS SSQV, and maybe a Trust Profec B!). I'll be fitting it in the next couple of weeks, so I'll tell you how it goes :) On the note of gauges, I just bought an Apexi water temp gauge (along with otheres! :D), and I was wondering if you guys know where to get the adapters for them? Thats what it looks like in the Japanese manual anyway! Looks like it fits into the upper radiator hose, where you clamp it, and the sensor screws in? Cheers, Lawrence.
  4. One more thing, about those plastic rivety things, u can pop them out with a screwdriver, but thats how they can break. I can't remember what type they are on the grill, but you MAY have to push it out from underneath 1st because they're two pieces. I'm meaning the ones with like a shroud you put in 1st, and then push another piece into it, to make it expand. Prying them out will only break those ones, because of the expansion at the bottom, unless you're very lucky. Cheers, Lawrence.
  5. Hey Grunta, Its pretty easy to remove the grill. There's only four of those plastic rivet type things to remove, at the top of grill, on either side, like to the inside of the lights, two on each side. I was a bit hasty in removing mine though, and broke one of them, so be careful! Once you have them off, the bottom of the grill slides into the top of the bumper, horozontally, away from the car (its a lot easier to see if you have the whole bumper off!), so you'll need to push the grill towards the engine/radiator. I'm not sure if you can take it off that easily with the bumper still on or not, I've never tried! Just say if you don't understand...pictures really help! If you need any, I'll try to sort it out :D Cheers, Lawrence.
  6. Thanks Keith, I thought you'd pop in here with an answer! I have thought about the idea of using more than 1 PCV or check valve. I guess your idea would actually be pretty easy to fabricate up. There's already a bit of puff coming from the crankcase at idle already, so I'm guessing it would be pretty simple rigging up a valve in that fashion! One more question, if ya don't mind answering it! If you can relieve all the pressure from the crankcase, would blow by cease to come out the breather tube (the one that leads to just after the air filter)? I guess another way of wording it is, is more beneficial for the pressure to come out of the PCV line, rather than the breather (like it is now at WOT)? I'm guessing yes to both questions though, it seems only logical, otherwise there's no reason for the PCV to exist :) Thanks again Keith...and I don't think I'll be heading the dry sump way yet!! :D Cheers, Lawrence.
  7. Hey guys, I'm wanting to install a catch can in my car, I've been noticing a bit of oil in my intake, then going through my turbo etc.. I also want to reduce crankcase pressure to help prevent blowing seals, and blow-by, since the chances of this are higher now the car is boosted. Anyway, I know where the PCV (pressure control valve) and breather tubes are. Now my problem is (I think I've thought about it correctly!!) is that I get oil coming through my breather hose down into the intake pre-turbo. Now, this happens because when I get positive pressure in the intake manifold, the PCV closes, because there's no vacuum to open it, and the positive crankcase pressure (which is a lot higher than normal due to boost) has nowhere to go apart from down the breather tube (which normally SUCKS from the intake, not blows). Ok, now the issue here I have is: is venting the crankcase pressure through the breather tube (i.e. when boosting) detrimental to the engine? Say, if the PCV was able to be open whilst boosting, would it be better for crankcase pressure to travel that route (in terms of engine life, seals blowing etc), or is it doing no harm going 'backwards' through the breather? If its no worse, then I'd just go for Option 4 (see below), but if that is the case, then they wouldn't have a breather in the 1st place, because all the fumes/oil would just go and get burnt up anyway, since its in the intake tract? Anyway, I've been told if I want to keep the PCV, then ideally I should find another source of vacuum to keep the PCV open, and it was suggested to use the pre-turbo intake. I don't see how this really makes sense, because I don't see there being ANYWHERE near the amount of vacuum in there, compared to the intake manifold (due to lack of a throttle plate). I took the hoses off the car temporarily, and noticed that there is positive pressure coming out of the crankcase at idle, do you guys think this would be enough to open the PCV by itself with no idle on the other side? (Remembering the PCV is just a 1 way valve, so vacuum on 1 side, or positive pressure on the other will do the same thing). I'm just wondering how on earth I should hook up a catch can? So the options I have thought of are - Option 1: PCV > catch can > pre-turbo intake, which takes its fresh air source (breather tube) from the intake. Option 2: Should I just put a breather filter on the breather tube instead? Making it not a fully closed system. Option 3: Or, go for a fully open system, ditch the PCV, run a catch tank off the old PCV line, with a breather filter on top of the catch can (or somewhere to release the pressure). This makes perfect sense, but then you get the smell associated with it going into the atmosphere, and I HEARD that your oil gets dirtier quicker this way? Option 4: Or should I do what a lot of people do, and just put a catch can in the breather line, and wait for positive pressure to push oil down the wrong way, like its doing at the moment! That wouldn't do jack on an N/A car anyway. Man, I've really rambled! I've read heaps of forums about how to do this, and heaps ppl come up with some wacky and different ideas! I hope you guys can comprehend what I'm saying! I should link to a picture of my car (its in the gallery somewhere), so show you where my breather tube is now hooked up, but I'm sure you get the idea when I saw its pre turbo. Thanks in advance guys! Hope it doesn't rack your brains at all! I hope I got it all wrong, and someone points out the obvious, and makes me look like a fool, cos I'm pretty stumped! There must be an easy way out! Cheers, Lawrence.
  8. Hey guys, Thanks heaps for your help. After mucking around with the multimeter some more, trying to find the speaker wires I gave up, and proceded to take apart the door panels and rewired up the whole thing! :) Thats alright, because in the long run thats what I was going to do anyway :) Cheers again guys! Lawrence.
  9. Stephenc: I presume I have the 8 speaker system. I've never had a detailed looked at any other Altezzas. I have the components up the front, and 6x9 looking speakers at the back. I've heard that they run a seperate hi/low pass for each speaker, instead of using a passive xover. So I guess that makes 4 mids/4 tweeters = 8 speakers? Cheap dirty marketing lol If you have any of those wiring diagrams it'd be great though! :) Corey: Damn mate, thats a pretty long cruise for 24 hours! I love driving those roads though! I have touch training on the Sunday arvo, so I might not be able to make it. I wouldn't wanna show my car off infront of the Toyspeed crew with my tatty looking boot either! (The missing (read: stolen) spoiler still hasn't been patched up yet! :( Cheers, Lawrence.
  10. I have a '99 RS200. Its not that I need an Alpine-Altezza adapter, its no use because I can't send the signal through the factory amp. If I can locate the factory amp then my problems will be solved :) I think I might just rip my door panels off and rewire from scratch though :) The alpine HU I have needs a dedicated constant power and ground (10 gauge), so the only wires I needed from the original loom was the ACC, and illumination. Cheers, Lawrence.
  11. Hi Guys, I'm just in the process of wiring up my new Alpine CDA-9813, and things are going along pretty smoothy, apart from a couple of things! Here they go: Where is the factory amp located, and what are the wire colours for the two front components (I'm ditching the back speakers)? Is there an illumination wire? I can't recall the factory stereo having it, and I don't wanna put it back in again to find out! I can't seem to find it with the multimeter anyway. The biggie is the speaker wiring colours, so if anyone has those it'd be awesome to find out! I can't really be bothered rewiring up the whole speaker and pulling the door surround off, so any help would be great! :) Thanks in advance guys, Lawrence. PS. Corey, sorry, I didn't get ur msg till the other day, I didn't even see I had a PM. Maybe this weekend mate, I should be pretty free :)
  12. I'm using an aftermarket Microtech LTX-8, which isn't set up to run as a piggyback, but a full EMS. This is my first car with an aftermarket computer, so I'm not sure what the characteristics of them are like. I'm pretty sure Corey runs a Link. I'll eventually get around to asking more people, and try to get it sorted, just being lazy atm :) Lawrence.
  13. Shot Corey, good to see your car is almost back in shape for the SI Champs! Maybe if for the SI Autosalon next year we could enter a LOC stand, a couple turbo tezzas in there would look pretty sweet :) So what was the story with your car anyway? I can't believe your cooler got nicked! My spoiler got stolen the other day! Ripped right off, rivets were almost ripped out of the boot too! I found the guy who tuned my car too. It was Advanced Automotive next to Turbo Tech in Sydnham. Found it runs open loop continuously, and he said he couldn't fix the idling problem, my hot/warm starting problem, where the car cuts out and dies :( I know Denco pistons are heavy and aren' the best but I'm pretty sure idle doesn't need to be set @ 1250 RPM, unless the engine rebuild was a shoddy one. I'll take it somewhere else, maybe RE Sinclair. See what they can do, can't hurt to get a 2nd opinion :) GL @ the SI Champs anyway, I'd come and visit ya, but I got a wedding in Dunedin this weekend. Pick up a trophy or two :) Lawrence.
  14. Turbo Tezza: You're in Chch right? Where abouts are you getting your dyno tuning done? My car is running kinda rich (I can see it coming from my exhaust when I'm on boost lol!) so I'd like to lean it out a lil bit. Its supposedly got a motec running in it, though I've got to look for it (I believe it though, since it lacks things like idle up now - real annoying!). Do you know who's a reputed tuner of these in Chch? Just moved away from Chch before the scene got really big, and went to sleepy Dunedin, so I don't know where to go now. Any help would be appreciated :) I'd like to just get a dyno run done, see what kinda power I'm putting out :) I'm thinkin by the seat of the pants meter, that the car has approx 200-220kw at the fly, on 7psi. We'll find out for sure one day though :) We should just meet up someday to check out each others cars :) You don't know the guy who owns the yellow turbo Tez in Chch do ya? Knew the fella was trying to sell it a month or so ago... Cheers mate, Lawrence.
