You forgot to mention what type of soarer it is.
In any case does the o/d light on the dash blink?
If so you need to check the codes that are stored in the transmission ecu.
These codes are valuable in location the possible source of the problem.
I suspect it is either a solenoid or pressure cable problem. Both are fixable by a competent home mechanic.

Be prepared to spend another couple of Thousand $$$. You will be needing new bushes in the front suspension, engine mounts, transmission mounts. Probably best to see if the car has a service history. A well serviced example will be a better buy.
In saying this, $2000 for a roadworthy LS is cheap. Have you got any pics?

Ho Janice,
Have a look on eBay for LS400 Springs Struts.
There are several listed for around $400-500 for ALL FOUR complete with springs AND struts.
Really cheap compared to other cars.

Hi all,
Just joined this forum after several months of using it as a great resource for repairing 20 years of neglect on my 1990 Celsior.
This place has been a life saver! I have to thank all the people who have contributed to the wealth of information.
I hope to add some of my experiences too. I am going to try to get my Celsior back up to original factory specification.
I look forward to mingling with others who have the same interests.
:)

Check your idle air control valve. It's the round black thing located right in the top font centre of the engine.
These are known to clog up. Remove it and clean the gunk from it with some WD40 or similar.
Also, check for any vacuum leaks around the manifold and intake track.
It might be a combination of several things causing the car to stall when cold.
