  1. congrats, the car should serve you proud if its been looked after. I just discovered a design flaw with the '92 drivers seat. I reclined it recently all the way down and when I tried to lift it back up the little teeth on the aluminium shaft that transfers torque from the motor side to the other side stripped and the seat back twisted and would not lift. i had to open the seat back up and release the cover to get at the mechanism and manually lift it back up. Now it doesn't work so I have it set were I want and I leave it alone. Maybe didn't happen in your case but then again who ever completely tells the truth when selling a car?

I use the autoglym leather cream every 4~6 months and it sucks right into the seats. With NZ and OZ heat and UV it does pay to maintain the leather suppleness.

On all the other stuff I have no experience, but I don't mind the frigate class handling. Post some pics when you have lowered it, always good to see the results.

    Cheers!

  2. Hi guys,

I have a post in the US forums on this subject, but in brief summary my revs, speedo, fuel and temp would all cut out after 10 minutes driving. Yet turn the car off for 10 minutes and they worked again for another 10 minutes.

Being the 1998 the multifunction display at the bottom would still work as a fuel gauge and indicate any faults so felt reasonably safe continuing to drive (just couldn't over take anyone else I risked excessive speeding fines!) So took the car to a couple of places to try and find the fault and 8 weeks later the last guy fried the board completely. Great.

So asked dealer how much for a new part, he quoted a number so huge I can't justify the cost of replacement. So the only alternative is a second hand part.

Does anyone know someone who is wrecking a 1998 LS and has part number 83800-50070 available?

I am based north of Auckland in NZ, but work part-time in the UK so can probably source from there (thats were my '92 LS400 is parked right now!).

Any leads/info greatly appreciated as I have an expensive piece of driveway furniture at the moment.

  3. In a word, no. That's $5kNZ plus shipping and GST Say $8 plus GST, = $9k.. I just paid $9500 for a near mint GenII with 100kms (62miles). Doesn't seem worth the bother does it?

A very good point, however have you driven yours around the Nurburgring? I have! I have owned it for long enough to avoid paying GST but have been told that the law in NZ has changed as far as frontal impact regulations or something like that.

Can anyone shed so light on the facts of importing these days?

Also whats the cost of insurance on these things third party now? Is the insuranc estill calculated on engine capacity?

  4. Hi guys,

I am a kiwi based in London at the moment and do the daily grind in a '92 LS400 UCF10 that I have become rather attached too. Are there a lot of series 1 cars available? I have looked on the auto trader website and wasn't impressed with the range. You can pick up a good high mileage unit for £2k as no-one wants to pay for the petrol! Is it worth me bringing her home?

    Your thoughts would be appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Leadfoot.
