  2. try altezza club - there are a few guys there with turbo altezza's.

and depending on what sort of power you want to get, you may not need to change anything other than fit a kit, or you may need a total rebuild, clutch, etc if you want to go mad. second-hand turbo kits turn up every now & then. there was a complete hks kit in the uk for ~$us2k on ebay not that long ago

  3. i have done this conversion on my own car & can tell you it is a lot of work - whilst the motor basically bolts in, the rest does not - there is a heap of minor mods to be done all over the place. (fuel & brake lines, clutch line, tailshaft, exhaust & the wiring!!

wiring requires quite a bit of work - you need to pull the dash & replace the looms, & even then there are bits you have to rewire there as well!

    not for the faint hearted.

(& no i'm not exagerating - i have done lots of toyota conversion, this one took quite some time)

  4. well if you can get ALL the parts from a wrecker, it should be a fairly straightforward conversion - be aware that the immobilizer is in the ecu, so you can't just swap ecu's - you'd have to swap keys as well for it to work. (or just use auto ecu wired up in "n")

you'd have to find yourself someone who knows what they are doing or you will find yourself paying $8k for this sort of swap. i could do it for you, but i'm in the middle of a home extension right now & am not taking on eny other work until it's complete.

to be honest it might be simpler to buy a secondhand auto box & get it swapped over & buy a manual car. (might be selling my car off soon if i get this company car - its a '99 man sports lux with altezza 3sge conversion in it)

  5. Hi Dan,

Have you already bought the motor & box?? as this may influence your decision!!

it's going to be much easier to swap just the motor to be honest - but it also depends on who is doing the swap. having done the clutch on my car 6 months before i pulled the motor out, i can tell you it is probably less work on an is200 to pull the motor & box out than just the gearbox!!

if your car is running ok, i think you should do a cost benifit analysis - how much is your car worth as it is to sell & buy a manual car? if you think your car is not worth that much, than go ahead with the conversion (you'll never get the money back on the conversion)otherwise sell it & buy the model you want - it will be easier & cheaper methinks

if you want to go ahead with the conversion it's not a massive project, as it's all factory option stuff - it will all bolt in, just take time swapping over the appropriate parts

  6. lots of parts are different. if you have access to the wreck that the motor came out of, grab the loom from behind the dash & the instrument cluster - this will make the conversion much easier.

otherwise you will have some wiring to do!!

You will also require the tailshaft.

not too difficult all things considered - but it would be 3 - 4 days of work i figure (without issues) having pulled mine apart & done an engine swap i know that it's not too easy getting the motor out or back in!!

  7. well depending on which state you are in - you may be able to fit a 1j or 2j. typically the transplant engine has to be the same age, or younger than the vehicle it's going into - the problem with 1z/2jzgte motors is that most are mid '90's vintages.

cost wise - unless you are paying someone to do it, the 3s conversion is probably the "easiest" (if you can do any of the work yourself) - however there is still quite a few bits to be modified & lots of parts to be stripped out & swapped over - also not the easy to find 1/2 cuts

3s can be turboed using one of the many aftermarket turbo kits, but for serious hp you need to drop the compression ratio (there is a nutter in nz with a turbo altezza making 335kw atw!!)

as i said above, 3s conversion around $5-9k, 1j/2j (as a manual) will prob end up being around the same sort of $$ - one real advantage the 1j/2j has is availability, but then you have to source engine mounts, mod gearbox mount, make tailshaft, custom wiring, upgrade radiator etc... 3sg is easier as it was already an option in that chassis.

  8. Aaaron,

well it depends on how it has been driven - typically toyota motors are pretty bullet proof, however the 1g has a few issues - mainly spinning bearings if not maintained, the odd oil leak & the dreaded dying coils.

k's really should not matter if its been looked after. for instance, when i bought my car it was an ex qld country car, had 235k on it. motor was very strong - never been given a hard time. when i did the engine conversion, i sold it to a guy who had a local car that had dome 240k & the motor was rattly & used oil....

  9. there are a small number of known problems with the is200:

lower front ball joints - check for freeplay/ clicks etc (well known issue)

    corrosion on wheels

engine mounts - generally car that has been driven hard

clutch - dual mass setup - expensive to replace! if pickup right at top of pedal, its due for a new one!

1g motor prone to throwing rods if abused / not serviced etc

3rd gear whine (should have been fixed under warranty but there may be some out there that were missed)

    cd player (error 3)

that should be most of them - not much really.

  10. you can make as much hp as you want to - you just need to upgrade the driveline to match

the is200 runs a 7.5" f series diff. pretty strong, but you can break them fairly easily once you have around 400-500hp. is300 runs the 8" g series diff - this diff is used in your chaser & heaps of high hp toyotas - very strong diff. almost a bolt in upgrade into an is200.

obviously you would need to upgrade the gearbox with the motor - a number of cars in aust running 1j & 2j turbo motors, one with 3uz (in build still i believe) & another i know of where the owner has a 1gz he plans to fit (5l v12 from the toyota century) - sold him my bare 1/2 cut for him to mock it all up.

so it comes down to how mad you are, & how much you want to spend to fulfill your mad desires (& that little thing money)

don't forget to upgrade the brakes too - supra rz brakes are a simple upgrade
