Good to hear you've ironed out all the issues with the varex. At this stage I'm pretty sure I'll being doing exactly what you've done - ppe headers, x force varex with the smart box and vline grom. Don't suppose you've got any audio of how your car sounds? Did you have cats welded in?

The grom is now $1189 so it's gone up a bit since your other post about it years ago. Are you still happy with it? Any reliability issues come up? How's the phone call quality compared to OEM for the person you're calling (it doesn't use the oem microphone for hands free calls right?) Found many apps that you've want3d to install that couldn't work on the F's low res screen? For me the functionality I want more than anything is really just Android Auto to work seamlessly and YTM or spotify. Being able to control the varex without touching the phone is an very welcome bonus though!

Nah never bothered to record any videos of it.  Probably driving it maybe once a fortnight at the moment if that lol.  I dont have cats with my setup.  People warned me i wouldnt be able to handle the fumes.  To be honest i don't notice anything, especially after replacing my rear cabin vents.  Perhaps my sense of smell is not the best but none of my passengers comment about it either.

I paid just over $800 for my Vline V2 but that was 4 yrs ago.  It does feel like a lot of outlay for what it is as you cant see it, you feel like you're not getting your money's worth vs an after market head unit you can see.  But there isn't really much options if you want a stealth approach.  I didn't want to go the Beatsonic route or others with a second screen sitting very low or Tesla type screen that doesn't suit my tastes.  Im very happy with my setup, makes an very outdated infotainment unit much more modern and useful.  I always use Waze or Google maps, spotify.  When the kids are in the car, i sometimes use Youtube for them or Netflix etc.  Much more functionality vs OEM so no regrets for me.

I don't use Android Auto though as its limited what apps can run so tried it but preferred to just use a custom launcher.  With just a click i can access most of my apps.  If driving, i use the voice command function to speak what i want such as navigate too (it will open my default maps app with the address i said).  Or open settings, name of app etc so don't need to type anything.  I even open Youtube, press the mic and my girls in the backseat say out loud what video they want to watch and it picks it up and opens that video.

I dont go crazy with apps but so far haven't had any issue with apps not being compatible or performing poorly.  As said, Waze, Google maps, Spotify, Netflix, Youtube, Chrome, Xforce etc all work fine.  My only observation would be that sometimes there can be a slight lag when i press a function and it responds.  Its not as fast as a phone for instance but for me not that bad, a few seconds really.

Given i don't use AA, my Vline connects via my phone hotspot.  I use a macro in the phone so when i get in my car, my BT connects and then the macro turns off my phone wifi and turns on the hotspot so then my Vline connects.  When i turn off my car, my BT disconnects so then my hotspot turns off with another macro command.  So with my setup, i use OEM to control phone calls via BT but with an update earlier this year, i can now continue talking and open the Vline again which wasn't possible before.  If you check the FB forums, some advise they use AA to control their calls so they may be able to give more feedback with that.  I use the microphone that came with the Vline for voice commands.  Mine also came with a VAux cable so i was able to mount a front camera with a switch which comes in handy so i watch my front lip when parking.  Image comes up nicely on the screen with the Vline and when i flick the switch, it goes back to the screen i was on so added flexibility that came in handy

Hey fellas, keen to hear an update on how you're getting on with the xforce/varex now several years later? Did I read correctly that with a vline grom you can adjust the varex from the cars touch screen?

Hi mate, wow this thread is going back some years lol.  My setup is going great, no complaints at all.

Years ago i was having a few issues with the motors seizing up meaning one of the mufflers would not respond with the remote (either stuck open/closed etc).  However for me, i ended up purchasing the smart box about 3 yrs ago so it could be controlled via the app and its never had any issues since.  I never use the remote now as you truly don't know what position the muffler is open/closed.  i.e. 10%, 50% etc.

With the app its great, you know exactly how open/closed it is.  I leave it 100% open when im alone, or about 30% with the Mrs as she isn't a fan of loud cars and sometimes closed on startup if im leaving early.

Yes you are correct regarding the GROM Vline.  I've had my Vline V2 for about 4 yrs now so once the smartbox was connected, i just downloaded the app with the Vline and i can control it all on screen.  Convenient in that you are not supposed to use your phone whilst driving.

The only time i discovered an issue with the app not responding was when i had it open on my phone and vline at the same time.  Im sure its a bluetooth issue as the smartbox was attempting to be connected to 2 units.  It would always come back online after the car was turned off for an hour or so or if i disconnected/reconnected to the box.  Since then when driving i just either the phone or Vline (generally the vline when driving) and it always works. Ive attached a few pics so you can see it on my screen.

My new steed. What a great car to drive.

I had been admiring this little beauty for years and now it is mine. Very happy indeed.

Congrats on the purchase, they are great cars and even better sleepers as the wider community have no idea when it comes to the ISF.  Most probably assume its a 4 cyl lol.  Ive had mine for about 5 yrs now and still love driving it as much as i did when i first got it.

Looks like you still cant get the PS91 in 275/30 off the Kumho website. Shame, probably would've given them crack. I'll probably order new bushings, install first then go with the MPS4S. RR racing USRS at the moment $675 landed.. not cheap but Figs just as expensive. I remember reading somewhere there was an aussie suspension company that had a bushing for the OEM housing that was a cheaper option. Anyone had installed that bushing can share their thoughts?

Saw the other day that Tempe tyres have them available if you dont mind using them

Heard good things about ps91. I recently got ps71 pair on the back of my 250. Not bad. Got great price from Bob Jane, price beat from Tempe Tyres. Stock size 255 40 18 with change out of $400 the pair fitted and balanced.

I paid $275 for the PS91 (285/30).  $550 fitted for the pair but mind you that was a few years ago

They look great. Guys/gals over on the American M3 forum seem to rate the PS91's. I'll get a price for them tomorrow.

Stock bushes. Considering the RR racing bushes when I bite the bullet and buy their performance upgrade package.. covid got in the way of that unfortunately.

I've had my ISF for 40k/2 years now and it hasn't missed a beat. Decided I'll be keeping it long term so going to start with the mods soon.

Yeah no complaints with the PS91s.  285/30 for the pair cost me $550 a few yrs back.  Bargain vs for that size, other more well known tyres was near 400 each.  Anyways due to the slight scrub i ended up going back down to 275/30 and couldnt get the PS91 in that size at the time.  When my current rears die ill most likely end up with MPS4S as im happy how they have performed up front.

I ended up with the RR USRS which have been great to date.  Dont get that inner tyre wear like i used to.  Shop around though, as much as i like them, with the AU$ and postage etc, there are cheaper alternatives out there which will do the job as well.

They are great cars eh.  Had mine for about 5.5 yrs now, also hardly missed a beat.  Cant tune them to the extent of turbo cars but still plenty of mods available interior / exterior

  7. Not sure about PS71 but i have ran PS91 on the rear.  285/30.  I had slight tyre scrub but thats due to my aftermarket wheels and offset otherwise i believe stock wheels will clear no issue.

I actually was surprised, they performed well street use and got decent longevity out of them.  Very affordable too.  Looks super agressive :-)

Hey you mentioned inside wear on your fronts which is common for the ISF.  Have you got stock or upgraded bushes.  Figs, RR etc.  Dramitically prevents this kind of wear

Does it work and how much oil gets accumulated in the catch can?

Best to minimise oil getting in the engine.  I dont wait for it to get too full.  Mines a daily, no track but spirited driving now and then.  Takes about 8 months or so for it to reach 40-50% full.

I know others who track their car say they can fill theirs up in the day

  9. I got MPS4S for my fronts, 245/35.  Rears still had tread so just the fronts for $329 each fitted but that was a while ago, im sure they have gone up in price since then.

Overall im very happy with them.  Good grip and so far great longevity.  Ive had a few before that, which just didnt last.  I also used to use MPSS up front and i find the MPS4S overall grippier and so far im getting more kms from them as well.

  10. Hi Gav Saf, sorry just seen this post.  I used Definition Car Detailing (Justin) to do my Ceramic coating.  Located in Rooty Hill.

I was happy with the results and he gets good reviews.  Like anything, you need to wash / maintain your car to maintain the results which isnt always easy with a black car but they look great when nice and clean.

Assume by now youve done many mods lol

  11. Shame the update they sent just caused other issues.  I remember a while back i had sound issues but they sent an update and it fixed it no issues.  Since then i cant recall any probs with mine touch wood.

I may have to invest some time looking into Android Auto.  Dont get me wrong, im familiar with it, seen it on the phone etc but dont use the unit much whilst driving so havent had that need.  Dont need Android auto for voice recognition.  I never type an address in.  I use the mic setup and voice my destination or if on Youtube etc, just voice the song, clip im after.  Dont really type much on their.  Even spotify etc, i use voice commands.

I mostly use Spotify and as its integrated into Waze, i havent had the need to explore other options, audio control with Waze running is no issue or just using the Steering wheel controls once the playlist i want is selected.

As mentioned though, my gripe is when i call comes in, it stays in phone mode and waze or whatever im running is put on hold.  I can see how it would annoy some.  Fortunately its not a huge deal for me as, i dont take too many urgent calls whislt driving that cant wait but a workaround solution to put the call screen in the background would be good.

    So whats next, Vaistech, Beatsonic???

  12. Damn, sorry to hear you had so much issues with it.  Ive had mine running for about 1.5 yrs now with minor issues and they have been resolved so ive been hassle free for most of the year.

Ive read that a few had reverse camera issues.  Touch wood ive never had that issue.  My rev camera always appears as it should like OEM.  Once i put it back to gear i just hit the auido button.  Beyond that my Vline starts up when i start the car and remains on unless an OEM function overides it like a phone call, parking sensors etc.

Dont use Android auto so cant comment on that one.

I assume the install was all done correctly?  Im not too audio tech minded so i had mine professionally installed.  Im sure its not complicated given how quick the guy installed mine but still.

I just got myself a OBD adaptor so i use it for all sorts of sensor info on screen, even got poor mans LFA tacho on my screen lol.

Glad they atleast refunded you but pity it didnt work for you as it has for me.

  13. Another use, started using the Torque app on the Vline with a OBD2 adaptor.  Havent had a chance to setup some custom themes just yet but eventually ill get that R35 dash look lol.  Quite cool to see RPM, voltage, AFR, temps etc.

  14. I have this one https://www.ebay.com.au/i/192349771926?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=705-139619-5960-0&mkcid=2&itemid=192349771926&targetid=467329387106&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9071755&poi=&campaignid=6472420982&mkgroupid=77077696025&rlsatarget=pla-467329387106&abcId=1141706&merchantid=118973406&gclid=Cj0KCQjw_absBRD1ARIsAO4_D3sn6b6pjJuH30ySzAG7AYQH0H3fAZQeEgk4ZlxnAJtiE2TpRy52NxMaAgc4EALw_wcB

You can get it for as low as $10 lol.  Bit bulky though so i guess its possible you foot could possibly hit it but i havent to date.  Runs well with the torque app and my vline.  Havent setup and custom gauges just yet but works well.

Did have another smaller one but hit and miss with connection so got a refund on that.

Love this in our is250c 2012, where did you put the unit? Anyone in melb who would be good to install? The price has sure crept up

Sorry cant help regarding Melb installer as im Syd based but regarding where mine is mounted.  Well im not sure about a 250 but i can tell you the ISF has hardly any decent storage compared to the average daily car.  So i didnt want to lose my glove box etc.

The installer found a good place for mine which is neatly tucked away, easy to access in about 30 seconds if that so i can connect other things to it when i want and all has been working well for the 1yr + ive had it.

When the carpet is tucked in, there is no bulge at all, you wouldnt know.  Since the install ive installed some new diamond mats which makes it even harder to know but as said, even without it, you couldnt tell, it tucked in the gap neatly

Also attached a side shot looking straight down, cant be seen anything is hidden underneath the carpet/mat

    They do look impressive.

Cheers John, yeah in the flesh they are very solid, you can see a lot of TLC went into the design, quality etc.  As per the pics, RR was very specific about shielding them from the heat with the material supplied etc so as long as they are fitted correctly using that stuff, i cant see these ones failing.

I was actually shocked though at the price of OEM ones.  I expected a higher price but was quoted $123.50 each so about 1/2 the price of the RR ones (low exchange rate and freight charges is what kills it when ordering anything from the states).

Anyways a week one and all is good.  Kind of feel like there has been some settling in.  I can feel the vibration enough to remind me but nothing over the top.  Throttle in various situations does feel more engaged, more connected.  Minimal increase in noise but really its miniscule as all noises from car is drowned out by the headers lol.

So overall still happy how its going

They're great, not gonna' lie but the thing I'm looking forward to most is not having to look at my black wheels smothered in brake dust after 2 days lol. Unfortunately Project Mu Australia was absolutely terrible and made me wait 3 months without any indication of when they'd be coming in, despite being told it would only be a 3-4 week wait for re-stock. Just glad they're on now, and these slotted rotors look amazing too, especially with the distinct colour of the Mu pads.

Yeah i got mine some time ago but heard since then they were discontinued, or maybe i read that on the US forums, cant remember.

Yep theres no missing the aqua/greenish/blueish or whatever you call it colour lol.

My OEM pads used to produce alot of brake dust, ive used Bendix too a while ago and similar thing.  Im sure someone here mentioned another pad that was quite good for street use and minimal dust, just cant recall the name

  18. Hi all, just thought id share something new added to my ISF a few days back in case anyone else is in the position and thinking about it.

As per the pics, i changed over my OEM engine mounts (1 was ok but the other was worn, alot of freeplay) and i could see that when the engine was revved, the engine flex was quite alot.  Consistent with the video RR Racing has put out showcasing their engine mounts.

They are a serious bit of gear, very solid build, look great (even though you'll hardly see them).  If you are environmentally friendly you wont be happy.  They came wrapped in countless amounts of plastic lol but well packaged nonetheless lol.

Got the same place who fitted my PPE headers to install them for me (yes its ideal to change the mounts over at the same time as a header install as the sub frame is lowered) but my mounts at the time was ok.

Anyways, my initial impressions (i am happy):

    • Cold start ups are awesome.  Already with headers, exhaust etc its loud, but the mounts make it feel that little bit more raw.  I can feel the vibration but its not excessive.  A non car person may not even notice im sure you all would :-)
    • Throttle response does feel a bit more snappier, more instant.  Its not like a throttle controller etc but the drive under more aggressive driving feels more engaged, no engine flex or hesitation
    • Vibration is very noticeable (a bit too much for my liking) when the car is in gear and stationary such as at a set of lights, drive thru etc.  This is with the aircon off and headlights off.  Lucky for my most of my driving, i leave the aircon on so not a big deal.
    • Ive seen other videos of other cars with engine mount replacements and the noise was alot louder, almost like a straight cut gearbox.  I can only hear a minor increase in noise at low speeds but its subtle.  The headers drowns all of that out.

500rpm seems to be magic number for me.  At this RPM, vibration is very noticeable.  With aircon on, my RPM increases to about 700 and the vibration is nowhere as excessive.  Same with driving at night or in my case heading to work each morning about 5am.  Turning on my lights increase my RPM to about low 600's so the vibration is not that bad.

Everyone always wants to know how much so ill let you know.

$250 USD on special as per their site

$68 USD fed ex postage = Basically $320ish USD.

Thanks to our amazing AU$ (yes im being sarcastic), it was $474AU landed 😞
