I guess there are two parts of the problem: opening the .docx file, and then translating the content from Japanese to English.

First thing's first:

1. Are you using any of the following:

- Microsoft Office Word 2007

- Microsoft Word 2010

- Microsoft Word 2003 with Office 2007 compatibility pack installed

2. Can you confirm that you can open .docx files that are written in English?

3. Are you able to open the Japanese .docx file in Word?

- If so, what do you see? Japanese characters or gibberish (like squares)?

- Have you tried cutting and pasting the text (even if it's gibberish) into Google Translate, Bing Translate or babelfish.altavista.com?

- If not, what is the error that Word displays?

Just trying to do something myself and came across, Google can do this, I think.

I didn't try it but it looked like the thing you are looking for.

This is how I found it;

Go to google.com

Search google translate

Select google translate

down below the text box is a blue highlight selection, translate document, select this, Choose your file and maybe it will work.

You may need to change the translation selection to include Japanese.

As I say I didn't try a file but this looks like exact what you are looking for.

Good Luck

PS: Stumbled across this looking to translate a icode website LOL
