Which Tyres?

Okay, I'm up for a new set of tyres, just wondering if anyone has used anything else other than the factory Bridgestones and if they would recommend anything.

I'm considering the new Michelin Pilot Super Sport, 245/35 on the front and 265/30 on the back.

That is kind of the combination I was thinking.

It does change the OD of the tyres a bit but I think it should still be OK.

Michelins I beleive have a softer side wall and hence the ride might impove but I think you are going down in wall height so may equal each other out.

Let us know if you end up going this way.

my oem's were Yokohama advans

im currently running 265/30/19's in the rear with the OEM wheels

still 225/35/19's but will be changing the 245/35/19's or even 245/30/19's

running toyo prox4's

That surprised me, all the OEM's I've seen are Bridgestones.

How do you find the Yokohama's?

Hi guys, I looked at the US forum and a lot of guys seem to like the Michelins although they were Pilot Sport PS2, could't find anything on the new Pilot Super Sport.

So I've ordered a set of Pilot Super Sports, as above, 245/35/19 and 265/30/19, I wanted 275/30/19 for the rear but they aren't available. Maybe they will manufacture that size later.

Big price difference between the PS2 and the Super Sports, but I decided to spend the money and get the newest technology. Tyres last me just short of two years (19,000 Km) so I'm happy with that, if I had been doing a lot more km's I would have went the less expensive option.

Anyway, booked in for next Tuesday, they have to come from Sydney. I'll get some pics up, profile etc and how they look on the car.

19,000 km in two years, oh my 23,000 in 9 months makes me think I should be looking at my tyres for wear ;)

Apparently 20k is about right, check the inside tread on the front that's where it wears the most. Mine looked okay until somebody told me about the inside front, they didn't look too healthy when I looked.

I'm getting them local from Bob Jane's.

Also, got another nice surprise, I had the car in for an oil change and have been told that I need new brake pads on the front and "Oh by the way we also change the rotors when we do this". What!

Price, around $2.5K, anybody else had this pleasant surprise. I thought they were taking the mickey.

Changing rotors is not always necessary and there are specs as to what thickness they should be, hairline cracks around the drilled cooling holes are measured if present, etc to determine if new rotors are required.

In terms of tyres, a lot of the US forum guys run 245's in the front and 285's on the rear as the rolling diameter is closer to original. They claim 9 inch rim handles the 285 ok! Any comments as I will be up for a set of tyres in the not too distant future as well.

Hey Malibu, feedback I've had is nothing bigger than 275/30/19, anything bigger will rub. Interested to know where you found the 285 info.

My info. came from an ex-service manger at Lexus, now manager at Bob Jane's, worked it out for me and said 275/30 was the largest possible on 9" rims.

The 285x30x19 seems to be quite a coomon choice - although slightly over the recommended max width on a 9" rim the rolling circumference is closer to original.

Anyone running nitrogen in their tyres, my neighbour with an S5 swears by it and says car feels much better and pressures are maintained for much longer periods of time. Think it cost about $10 per wheel and will give it a try in the next week or two.

Just quickly, new tyres are on today. Definite improvement, the ride feels better. Pressure is 40 psi and have been filled with nitrogen.

I want to give it a week or so before I comment fully, just thought I'd let you know about the nitrogen 'malibu'.

Yep, that's the way I went. I'm very impressed, their a nice ride even at 40 psi, definitely notice the difference. I feel like there's more feedback on the steering.

The tyres look great, the back ones fill out the guards nicely. The front ones are fantastic , so much better looking than the OEM size. The car looks even meaner now.

i'll get some better pics up, crap first attempt although I think you can see the difference on the front, see what you think.

My OEMs were Yoko Advans. I got 45,000 km (they were quite bald)

Just changed to Falken F452, 275/30/19 rear, 245/35/19 front with nitrogen. I don't really notice the difference with nitrogen except the it should remain at the set 40PSi for long periods of time, so the tyre pressure should not deteriorate. Bob Jane did mine. They said 285's were not recommended on 9 inch wide rims and would not fit them.

I had to replace rotors and pads at 40,000km. The service guy said I did well, he said that many have had to replace at 20.000km - 30,000km. From memory $2,500 or so.

Michelins are still good, 9000 km and not showing much wear yet. I had to change the OEM Bridgestones at 20,000 km.

I like them a lot, just a bit pricey.
