Purchased a 2nd hand IS 250 and the owner said he only got 1 key(He's the 2nd owner, and im the third).

He called up Lexus dealer and dealer confirmed they only provided him with 1 key.

I wonder if this is normal coz I assume every car comes with AT LEAST two keys...

They cost a fortune for me to replace... so I hope the seller can share some of that cost, if not all.

same here. I bought my car 2nd hand from the dealer and it came with two keys.

like what Tonage said, the previous owner probably lost his spare keys. And unfortunate you're right, it costs a bomb to replace them. $250 maybe??

If a used Lexus was traded in, and was missing the spare wheel, one would expect the dealer to supply a new space-saver wheel before selling it.

Applying the same principle, you'd think the Lexus dealer would provide a second key, and factor their cost into the sale price.

u should have just bought the empty key off ebay.. i got mine for $80 and they cut and programmed the key at lexus for $90

Thats very nice to hear. Can you tell me which dealer you got the key's cut n programmed?

I think i've read it somewhere that it would cost $500 to program the key.. And that scared me...

There are specialists out there (autoelectricians particularly I think) who'll do this service for next to nothing. Classic case was my wifes Golf key died one day. Went to VW and they quoted $350 for new battery and programming. Took it to our local mechanic who whilst servicing the car for half the price of VW, also got the same thing done for the key (new battery from Battery World and programming from autoelectrician around the corner) all for $40. Gotta love VW. Needless to say (and for other quality and service reasons too), the Golf is gone, and we'll never buy another VW ever again!

This is very true.

A great contact for those in Sydney for exactly what Sapphire Cam has mentioned.

Lexus owners would definitely save money on key problems with these guys and their work is first class.

Maybe we should have a sticky of good Lexus contacts such as the one above, approved panel shops and the like.

I've got quite a few for all sorts of things.

That's a great idea especially if it's $700 to replace a key!!

I dunno whether it's just me but every 2nd hand I've bought from a dealer only came with 1 key.

I have a feeling that depending on the car they keep the transponder because they can re-code it required.

I bought my Lexus new so it came with 2 keys/fobs.

It is definitely worth checking all dealers for their price. I was amazed that the three dealerships in Melbourne ranged from $725 to $594 for a replacement key!
