Just a word I have been quoted $400 by a Lexus dealer for a full oil, filter change and he tells me it should be dun at a certain oil temperature they say they have dun lots of them.

Lexus Parramatta quoted me $620 for my ISF (different transmission to the IS250)

Hi gfs250,

Thanks for the excellent write-up! Another person here posted about this just last year. He also had some excellent information (pasted below).

To be honest I'm really surprised to read the Lexus Dealers are now offering this service, what with it being a "sealed system" and all that.

I'm in Sydney and planning to get the same job done early next year. My mechanic agreed that it should be done, and says he can recommend a transmission specialist in Parramatta. I'll report back how it went and who it was once I get it done (for the benefit of other owners here, not sure why mentioning a place is such a big "secret"?).

Me either... everyone is tap-dancing around the issue like it's some illegal activity.

I know my box needs flushing and this thread is one of the most useless reads I've seen so far.

If you know a reputable place to get it done, for the benefit of other readers please mention where it can be done.

Hi Atlantis

I wrote this line below on one of my posts in this thread for the benefit of Melbourne Owners, it reads -

"Get that oil changed and I can highly recommend Kewish Automotive -  29A Amberley Cres, Dandenong South, Phone  (03) 9793 2220"

Sorry mate but that clearly states a business name and address, even a phone number to call and as for your comment  "this thread is one of the most useless reads I've seen so far" well best of luck to you and that will certainly encourage new members to the forum with an attitude like that coming from a moderator..

I was referring to the Sydney crowd, so my apologies for not being clearer on the matter.

You were the only one to post a location, but albeit 1000km away from most people asking the questions on here.

Thanks! That's very close to me, and great to know where I can get the tranny fluid change.

Maybe the Sydney places are offering kickbacks for personal referrals? ;-)

I mentioned Lexus Parra, Lexus being an obvious choice i guess but Autowerks in Bev hills can also do it.  I got a service done on my ISF with the intent of getting the trans flushed too but Lexus didnt have a gasket and a few other parts required so i didnt get it done but they advised they do this and other cars regularly (for sealed units) so call them for a price for a IS250 or whatever Lexus you have.

You could save a bit as well and get the oil before hand (cut the middle man out so to speak).  Its about $65 for 4L through Ebay sellers (genuine toyota stuff for the ISF, not sure about a 250)

Hi,

Well today I drove my IS250 to Dandenong to the premises of Kewish Automotive - Transmission Specialists.

I had booked my car in a week ago to have the automatic transmission serviced, this being a full flush and new filter kit installed.

My car is a 2007 sports luxury with 156,200kms, I am the second owner (brought in 2015) and after talking with the original owner, he confirmed that he had not had the gearbox serviced/oil changed.

After reading a lot of different views about "sealed for life" etc, well personally I found that a complete crook of bull*BLEEP* myself and hard to believe, nothing is sealed for life and oil breaks down, its that bloody simple in my mind.

I brought this car to keep long term and I believe preventative maintenance is the key to this and like I said in my earlier post I was referred to Kewish Automotive and they came high recommended from a good relative in the car trade.

Anyway I will get to it, David at Kewish Automotive was excellent when I arrived, I then went shopping up the street and I happen to return earlier than expected, the car was up on the hoist so I was able to watch the procedure from the side line and chat to David as he went out his buisness.

The oil was a very dirty brown colour, the pan was slightly gunky and the 3 x magnets were covered but no metal flakes or chunks were present, this was great to see and Im glad I had arranged to have the oil changed, the cost was $400 plus GST.

The new oil was flushed thoroughly right throughout the system and gearbox with the engine running until the new red tranny oil appeared, I was surprised at the amount it takes actually to flush the system.

These photos below I took myself.

This oil is from my automatic today, a car that has been babied along at 110 - 120kph only on open roads and freeways for most of its 9 years by 2 mature owners, It has never been flogged or raced through the gears so I would hate to think what the oil is like in a car that has been given a hard time with short stop start driving.

Get that oil changed and I can highly recommend Kewish Automotive -  29A Amberley Cres, Dandenong South, Phone  (03) 9793 2220

Do you happen to know/remember, where exactly did they hookup tubes to drain and fill?

Thank you.

NO!!......  :)

For the professional, thorough service and attention to detail they gave my car, for $400.00 I'll certainly be going back there again in another 30,000 kms as the gearbox is running and changing so very smoothly at 173,000 kms on the clock now.

This is good information for ALL Lexus owners. Can anyone recommend a workshop in Sutherland shire (Sydney)that can perform this?

Guys,

My IS250 is now at 160,000km, car drives flawlessly, engine is still going strong as ever, Motul oil every 7500km, no problem with gearbox what so ever.

I'm just taking precaution here and booked for a transmission full flush at TNK automotive Girraween on this Friday. I mentioned Danny's referral, the owner (Bill) sounds very nice to deal with over the phone, his main mechanic also his son Ahmed will do the actual work.

I'll take some photo and let you how it goes and how the car drives afterwards. This will be the last service to my car before I upgrade to a newer car at the end of year.

Dont know BUT I have changed oil on many vehicles in trans, diff's, xfer cases etc that all say, sealed, good for life etc etc.

Issues afaik only come when items like organic clutch materials start to break down. Two things can happen, good and bad.

Unsubstantiated good thing is the "old" oil carries around the minute particles of organic material and it enhances (may?) the worn parts.

An oil change "may" also loosen up deposits when subjected to higher levels of cleaning and friction modifiers in new oil.

Bad thing is the filter may slowly block up. This has been known to cause overheating issues in other vehicles.(MB etc)

In my book an vehicle with high k's and no changes would probably be best to leave it alone...who knows?

Toyota do suggest after 50k's for the same GB in Toyotas. (Advised from an dealer service manager)

Me...I always change ALL the lubricant in my vehicles every 2 years.

Thanks bazzle, there is some merits to the "old" oil theory, I've seem a few online debates about this too.

Some say If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But like you, I'm always try maintain my car proactively. No oil will last for ever.

I'll get the Diff oil changed too.

Everyone will have a varying opinion on this.  I did this for my ISF about 4 months ago.  It had about 90k.  I dont track the ISF and not sure about previous owners, hence why i wanted to do it as a preventative thing not knowing its full history.  I was surprised, the oil was in good condition, no flakes, debris etc and colour lightish.  I wouldnt have changed it had i known but nevertheless, was a good insurance policy at the time if you get my drift.

Those who track their cars are more adamant to get it done which i get.  Yes its a sealed unit but Lexus etc will still happily quote to do the job.

Most get alot of it out but only a flush machine will really get all out.  Most i think do the cooler, drain the pan, change the filter, gasket etc then of course the oil.

Hi Will,

How did it go?

Any photos?

OK guys, I've just done the transmission oil flush and diff oil change at TNK automotive Girraween today. Dropped my car in at 9am this morning, got a call from Ahmed around 1pm that the car is ready for pickup. It has been a great experience with TNK, they've done many 2IS, very familiar with the flushing process. It's a family run business, Bill (the owner) and his son Ahmed (head mechanic) are top blokes. I highly recommend anyone in Sydney thinking flush the transmission oil to go see TNK, might be a long drive for some, but well worth it. And thanks to Danny (ilv1004s)'s recommendation at first place.

As I couldn't wait around, Ahmed is also kind enough to take photos of the whole process for me. See photos below

You can see the gearbox oil is first drained by removing the pan, but that will only take out about 50% of what's inside, then a special flushing machine must be used to pump out the residual oil and inject new oil while the car and gearbox is running until you see the fresh oil (pink colour) comes out.

My car has done just over 160,000KM, so the old oil in gearbox is very muddy and the magnets at the bottom of the pan have collected many fine dusts over the time due to wear and tear. I'm really glad I did this oil change, it's hard to image how this can be "unchangeable oil".

Then new transmission oil filter is installed along with a new pan gasket. While the car is on the jack, I also asked TNK to do the Diff oil change. The diff oil has this creamy colour, not sure if this right or not? Finally a plug-in scan/test to make sure no fault code.

With the new transmission oil, I don't notice too much of a difference. I feel the shift response has a subtle improvement, especially during uphill acceleration, the gearbox shift in the next gear slightly quicker. Overall, I think it's more of a piece of mind knowing your transmission is looked after.

Anyway, hopefully this give you guys a better idea of the process, and Sydney sider has a reputable workshop to go. http://www.tnkautomotive.com.au/

Thanks to gfs250 for starting the thread.

William

177,000kms, on it now. We plan on keeping it for many years as it does everything lovely and easily plus we are not one for the latest bell's n whistles very few years :)

The diff is not a seal unit, no:)

Thanks to gfs250's recommendation I had mine done today.

The oil came out black, but that doesn't always mean a lot.

Filter wasn't too bad and no buildup on the magnets in the pan.

Was easy to flush thru as mine has an heat exchanger on the side.

Had the diff oil changed as well. That just looked like diff oil when it came out :whistling:

Right again for the next 70k's  Cost for trans oil change and filter $440

An hours driving it just felt nice and smooth, not much noticeable difference but most of my runs are in top gear on freeways atm anyway. :wink3:
