Do Lexus Think We're Stupid?

Do Lexus think we're stupid? I think they must do. Why else would they make the decision on whether or not it's safe to enter destinations into the sat nav system on our behalf?

Driving our new IS250 (which, apart form this gripe, we love!)down the freeway last night heading into Perth we decide we want to head to a new restaurant. We get the address from the iPhone and attempt to program the sat nav. What? The button is disabled. Upon reading the manual the next day it appears this is a 'safety feature' to prevent the driver from being distracted. To enter new destinations, you have to stop the car!! Had they not considered that there might be a passenger on board who can quite safely operate the sat nav? If they're so concerned to protect us from ourselves why do they enable any of the console features while the car is moving - for instance, why is it not safe to enter destinations into the sat nav but safe to play around with the hi-fi accoustic set up? Why have they decided to remove the drivers ability to decide for themself what is safe and not safe to do under a particular set of circumstances just for the sat nav? I get a warning sound if I don't put my seat belt on, but I can still drive the car like that if I CHOOSE to. It's not safe to drive the car at 200kmh, but I can still do it if i CHOOSE to (can an IS250 do 200kmh?!) etc etc. I'm sorry that my first post on this site is such a negative one, but this has REALLY annoyed me. I don't have experience of other built in sat nav's of my own but I know that my brother's Audi Q7 allows the sat nav to be used while it's moving. Why do Lexus assume we aren't intelligent enough to choose for ourselves? After all, IT'S MY BLOODY CAR! Phew, that feels better. Now, where did I put my Garmin....

It's Australian law, ie, you can't legally register a car if the DVD player (or any moving screen for that matter I believe) can operate when the hand brake isn't engaged.

However, my father-in-law (Japanese) has an older car that lets you watch TV, DVDs, etc while the car is driving. Now in Japan all new cars have the hand brake system applied. On a side note, did you know in Japan you don't need to wear a seat belt if you're sitting in the back seats?

I think the cut off for the sat nav keyboard is when your speed exceeds 5km? Something like that... anyway, you can appreciate how dangerous it would be for a driver to be dicking around with his satnav and not focusing on the road.

I saw a hack for around $350 that lets you get around it, not sure if I'm prepared to spend that kind of money.

or u can do it yourself by hacking the cables that send the signal to the nav unit lol

can you operate the onscreen ventilation/ audio settings while on the move?

yes i believe you can do tht. i have an aftermarket setup

I have an OEM satnav. Yes, you definitely can operate all audio and climate controls, but navigation and phone controls are limited to some degree while the vehicle is in motion.
