Hi guys,

Hoping someone can help me out here.

Im usually not much of the hard driver, with sometimes having the transmission in S. I noticed that when im in 3rd gear and i push the rev range above 3000-3500rpm i get a really bad almost egg fartish like smell.

Im wondering if this is normal and if anyone has experienced this before? Ive also noticed that my oil use is tremendously high. I changed the engine oil 5000km ago and have had to top up twice (engine oil notification came on). I use 5w-30w mobil engine oil.

I have a 2008 is250 prestige. Hoping someone can help me out.

Do I have a lemon??

Everything else seems to be going well. I average 9.1L/100km in the city

Thanks heaps in advanced.

Hi guys,

My 2006 Sport is the same if I get heavy on the gas, (and being manual I probably do that more than should)

I have read a number of suggestions as to the possible cause and how to deal with it, but the one I believe is the issue for my IS, is the primary catalytic converters. Apparently Lexus changed the CATs in the 08 or 09 model and in the states they actually offered owners with earlier models experiencing this, the option of having the CATS swapped out, but not here in Oz :(

A common suggestion is to try a different fuel supplier, so BP instead of Gull, etc...but I have tried many, in many different areas around Perth and this has made no difference for me, so I am currently looking into what options there are for aftermarket exhaust manifolds with new CATS and bolting that on in place of the stock one........ unfortunately I have not found one yet that wont bring up any fault lights

Use BP Ultimate.

As above.I too suggest you try BP Ultimate and stay away from Shell fuels.

linhtron,

You've got enough info on the exhaust smell issue: try changing fuels and, if that doesn't satisfy you, then you'll need to look at exhaust changes. The engine oil consumption is an entirely different matter, and has been discussed in a number of places on the Web, including in this topic. In short, there's a known issue with excess consumption in some IS250s produced before mid-2010. While these problems are being addressed in the US, there is no such recall on Australian vehicles; so you won't automatically qualify for a free fix if you present your car at your local Lexus dealer.

Suggested solutions:

  • Perhaps you can work something out with your local Lexus dealer, such as getting them to perform a scheduled service on your car (you'll need one in the next 12 months, anyway) but only if they warrant that the oil consumption will be reasonable over the next 15,000 km.
  • You're the second person to have reported this issue recently on this forum. The last guy also reported using Mobil oil. Other bloggers on the Web have reported issues with using Mobil 1, at least with predominantly highway driving. Try changing your brand of oil.
  • 4 months later...

As mentioned in my previous post, oil consumption and exhaust smell are two separate symptoms with completely different causes.

Your exhaust smell, as Abnrml pointed out, is caused by the standard exhaust.

Hey guys i also had the egg smell on my 2008IS. The smell is the sulphur in the unburnt fuel into the cat. I tried all the different fuels but that is not the answer this was the Lexus statements from the service to avoid having to replace the cats as you guess they would have had to change a lot of catalytic convertors. Go to exhaust specialist for solution.
