Rattles - Anyone Got One?

How do they lubricate the seals, what product do they use? Is this something that can be a DIY task? I have an annoying creak/rattle near the left A-pillar. I only hear it on rough roads, it sounds like the noise from the sun visor when you pull it down. I have tried holding teh visor but the noise is still there.

It should be a DIY task. After I complained about a rattle, a Lexus technician put it down to the door seals and said he'd show me how to lubricate the seals the next time I visited the service centre. He didn't get around to showing me - not that I minded much, as I rather they do it while the car's under warranty. But, suffice to say, it must be a DIY task and the lubricant should be readily available.

Well the ISF is in for it's first service tomorrow 15km and I have asked them to again look at the rattle / squeak.

After a few months of putting up with it I am now sure it is the seals squeaking and not actually a rattle.

See if we make any progress to fixing the problem tomorrow.

Have warned the service department I want it fixed LOL

Got my ISF back.

Seems they fixed the problem (touch wood).. They had the car for 2 days.. Got a loaner RX350.. Nice smooth ride.. Seems they improved the ride quality compared to my old RX330 a few years back.

Anyway, they tested the car again on the 2nd day and they were pretty happy they got rid of the noises. Apparently they had to take the whole dash out and do some adjustments etc. Just love the chatswood service department. This dealership always go out of their way just to fix some mundane/little things:)

They also seem to have fixed the day/night modes on my Navigation screen. Since picking up my car, the screen wouldnt change from day to night modes. I thought this was normal that it would stay on day mode (bright screen) continuously regardless if the headlights are on or off. This is fixed eventhough I hadnt pointed this out.

Blacky: How did you go with your rattle problem?

Well got the car back from the service and nothing, still there!!!

Can't really say much other than disappointment, it is very small but a complete pain in the ass.

Anyhow, the service guys say it is with Lexus Aust.

So I sent them a customer service comment this morning LOL

See if they come back and how they come back.

It is a real bummer that such a simple thing can ruin the experience.

Will keep driving either way B)

Well it is kind of a long story but still the same result, THE NOISE IS STILL THERE!

Because of my last visit to the dealer and the statement about being with LExus Aust, I sent an email off the Lexus Aust telling them how disappointed I was in the car, all due to a small but niggling noise which has been with the car since new and not been resolved after 5 visits to the dealership.

I did get a response to this by Lexus Aust but like everything these days, it looks like it is just lip service.

The service manager did call me again and I went in with the car and took him for a drive.

It took a while as the noise is very faint sometimes and the driver is the only one that can hear it but I was able to get it to make enough noise on some roads that he could hear from the passengers seat!.

So where does this leave me, ok the service manager has now heard it but they said they heard it before and he now knows the types of roads that replicate the problem, so I have to put the car in again to be looked at by the LEXUS Aust. specialist!!

He has looked at it 2 times now and no result, so I do question the specialist a little LOL

Anyhow, the rattle is still there and I will continue to work with them to find a solution.

Unfortunately what ever they did last time (I think adjust the door strike) it has made it worse

One thing that I might have found in my endeavours to pin point the problem area, is if I drop the window a fraction I think this helps, maybe, maybe not. That is if I just quickly touch the down window to break the window to seal gap I think the noise is reduced.

Same *BLEEP* different day ;)

Rattle / Squeak, for me it is a ticking noise which I think is a rubber squeak but comes across as a constant faint tick.

It mostly happens when the car gets a little jiggle from wash board type roads, or maybe a concrete road with constant breaks in the road which is kind of everywhere. Large thumps just hide the noise because of the thump from the tyres etc.

Speed is not an issue as it can happen at walking pass and on the freeway etc. That is my biggest problem with it, you could be on a 3 hour drive and hear it on and off for the entire drive or simply driving to the shop and other times it might not be there but most of the time it comes up.

Look forward to hearing how they resolve yours if they end up finding a solution.

Good luck

New up date on this one.

Dropped my car off again while in NZ for a couple of days, this time hoping we might get a positive result.

Picked up the car yesterday afternoon and immediately left the dealer and I heard the noise

However, I have driven to Frankston and back today and I think we might have got some sort of good result, on the freeways and other > 60 km/h roads it looks like the noise is reduced or I could almost say gone :D

Will see how things progress from here but things are looking on the up, after 9 months and 5 visits to the dealer.

Persistance may have paid off, fingers crossed ;)

Other brands would have given up long ago.

Rattles are a real pain....I've been left to fix a few, the worst in a Yaris/Echo. The bottom line really was the owner really wanted a camry but only had cash in his pocket for a Yaris/Echo. But that's another story!!

Been reading a few of your posts and in one you say that it seems if you wind the window down a tad, it "seems" to reduce/stop the noise.

I have had this before with electric windows. Usually when the motor winds up and stalls out the window in the frame. The stress this places on your considerably weak inner door skin can create stress fractures in the door and or window winder mechanism. Even if there is not a fracture or crack, the tension alone can cause the same ticking noise.

Personally I would try to ever so slighty drop the window down like 2mm or so, just to release the pressure and try that. Then try it closed.

I've also had Land Rover Freelanders with inner door skins not welded properly from factory and it caused the same noises. However, this was discovered and ended up being a recall.

I'm not saying your door is fatigued or cracked or whatever, but stress causes some strange side effects. It may be neccessary to undo your window regulator bolts that secure it to the frame and just try a simple reset of the window.

I wouldn't touch it yourself other than to just try help diagnose it for the dealer. They will loose interest very quickly!!

Please remember that whilst you have lived with your car for a while and know its every rattle and noise, The guys at the shop only get a limited time to try and get to the bottom of it. All they can effectively do is remove trim and parts and hope to discover it.

These problems used to get referred to us all the time, we never had time constraints and it makes a big difference. It just had to be fixed!

So with your expert knowledge or where or when, or how the click/tick appears. You can definitely assist your Lexus techinician by pointing him/her in the right direction with your experiences and your own diagnostic.

Let me know, if the noise changes or improves or gets worse etc.

Hope this helps

Thanks

Simon

Hi Guys, Just joined and thought I would share. Exact same problem as Blacky, very slight rattle/ticking noise from the drivers door or seat belt pillar in the ISF. This has been there ever since I had my car. What the dealer was doing was removing the door seal and lubricating them, this would fix the problem for about 500Km then it would return. After about the third time the dealer said this was a known problem with the ISF due to the rigidity of the chassis (mmmmm!) and all they could do was keep lubricating the door seals every time I had the car serviced or whenever I wanted. Anyway, I am used to it now and it doesn't bother me anymore, but still there, it definitely disappears with the window down or even slightly lowered.

Now with the new Joe Z exhaust, loud music, lowering the window and the ageing process of going deaf I don't hear any rattles.

Cheers

It has been more than a week since I last put the car in and I do think the ticking noise has been reduced or possible eliminated. However I still have a squeak with large movement of the car, which really only came about after the service teams attempt to fix the time after last.

I will try to find our from my service manager how they fixed the ticking.

Yes how is the JoeZ?

Did you import yourself?

Is Lexus Chatswood the way to go to fix these? Mine are so irritating some days I think it will make me sell the car.

Right now I have rattling:

- Centre console;

- Centre air con vents;

- Passenger air con vent;

- Driver's door;

- Passenger's door; and

- Driver's seat creak*.

* I fixed the plastic cap creaking myself after all Lexus ACT did was put some grease on the rails despite their being a service release on it (which I got off the net to use to fix it). Now have a new one from the back of the seat.

The local service has been bad too, I had to change my air filter myself after they said it was brand new when it looked as old as the car - they never checked.

I've never had a modern car with this many rattles, I actually chose an IS F over a M3 or C63 for reliability and refinement. I've only been disappointed so far in regard to refinement.

I'd be more than happy to take my car to Chatswood if they can help. These things drive me nuts! My old R32 GTR was better.

Any help/comments would be appreciated.

While I don't have an IS-F, I've still had the unfortunate displeasure of putting up with all these rattles and squeaks in my '11 IS350 F Sport.

It's got to the point now where I have just bought another car and will look at selling the IS because I'm totally over it.

I've had the drivers door seal rattle and the ONLY way it can be fixed (and its only temporary) is to lube the seal with silicone spray/tyre shine (wtf!?).. Not something you should have to be doing regularly on a ONE YEAR OLD car that cost in excess of $80k!

As I said, it's a temporary fix and as soon as I wash the car and dry it/wipe out the door jambs and seals - it obviously removes the lubricant and the rattle comes back instantly.

It also disappears in the window is dropped slightly.

Pathetic IMO.

Dash rattles - where do I start!? The RH outer air vent area rattles and drives me insane every single time I drive the car. It's only a very feint rattle (similar to static in a speaker etc) but in such a refined cabin - is easily heard. Car has been back 5-6 times for this issue alone with the entire dash being removed last time (which annoyed me no end) and not making any improvement what-so-ever.

I also had an insanely irritating squeak coming from the dash panel above the instrument cluster on hot days. Sounded exactly the same as two blocks of polystyrene foam being rubbed together constantly. Obviously something was expending with the heat from within the dash causing the problem.

I once had to drive 3 hours listening to it constantly (was heard even with the ML sound system set to volume of 45) and was ready to write it off! Captured it on my phone and took it straight to the dealer principal/manager. They had the car for almost 2 weeks and managed to rectify the issue - being a lack of insulation between the instrument cluster and the dash pad or something.

Sunroof creaks and rattles in the tilt-up position (the usual position I like it to be in) - not sure if this is wind deflector related or the seal itself rubbing on the roof sheetmetal. So just keep the thing closed now - well worth the $2,500 extra at time of purchase - NOT!

Also have static type rattles from the B pillar area on coarse chip bitumen and a slight rattle from the rear parcel shelf area..

I love my IS, it's a great looking car and has so much packed in to it for the price - but the interior is absolutely crap IMO. The only thing I will give it is that it's a car that's virtually 7+ years old in design so that can be used as an excuse as to why the interior is dated/lacking in build quality.

The dealer has been fantastic, I've never been without a car or inconvenienced because of it - they've always picked my car up and delivered it (which is handy because its a 450km round trip to my dealer) and I can't fault their service at all - but in a car that costs as much as it does, carrying claims (self made claims) that its one of the best built car in its class is just garbage and shouldn't be something you should have to deal with.

I'm hoping the next IS is faultless in these areas because I really want to upgrade to one of those and I won't be happy if I go through all this again!

Ben, I really feel your pain! Although I didn't buy brand new, I expected better.

I had a 2009 Falcon XR6 Turbo before this car - far, far, far, better with interior rattles and squeaks (it only had one on old roads with far more kms on it!). Years ago, a 2002 Monaro which was again, far better. It was an older design, big heavy doors, quiet cabin... Not annoying. My wife has had a 120i and now a 130i... Again, far better.

I've had 35-40 cars (I've lost count) and none have been as annoying interior-wise than this car. NONE. I can accept some rattles on some roads but not constant vibrations which drive me insane.

Today I've been driving around with the stereo on 40 but I can still hear them. WTF is the point of this I wonder some days, stereo has to go up and maybe put an exhaust on the car to drown out the rattles?

Lexus Canberra workmanship is very poor which is why I was hoping Chatswood might bet better?

This will likely be my first and last Toyota and if I can't get someone to sort it out it will no doubt make me trade the car... I don't want to make the people who said I should have bought an M3 right (esp since I'm from a BMW famiy!).

sounds like u got a lemon on the interior

mines quiet as a coffin now

just had the sunroof rattles fixed

my IS350 is dead quiet

my little brothers 2006 IS250 is dead quiet

if you bought your car used

probably been played around with

I don't know how it can be "played around with"? Not even sure what that means. I bought it with 45k kms on it, I'm the second owner and the car has always been looked after with full Lexus service history.

I just regret test driving it on smooth roads. I don't really think it's an isolated incident or that this car is a "lemon" given all the information on interior rattles all over the internet.

Danny, you have posted a number of times in the thread with rattles that were fixed by Lexus Chatswood... You only specifically mentioned the sunroof but have said "rattles" (plural) were fixed. So I presume you recommend them. Which ones did you have done?

Certainly isn't an isolated incident.

The IS250 loaner I was given last time (BRAND NEW - 6kms on it) had similar dash rattles - although not as severe..... But that's how mine started out...
